Lowering the Cost of HealthcarePutting Families and Doctors Back in Control of Healthcare DecisionsMinnesota is the healthiest state in the country. We have the lowest number of uninsured of any state. With the Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota, and companies like Medtronic and Saint Jude Medical, we lead the world in medical technologies and standard of care.![]() Congratulations to Lakeview Hospital Obstetrics Department. Patients ranked Lakeview OB #1 when asked 'Would you recommend Lakeview to your friends and family?' However, costs are rising out of control for families, small businesses and school districts. Government mandates and HMO “reform” gave insurance companies too much control and an unhealthy incentive to keep you from seeing your doctor and getting the care you need.As the Minority Lead on the Health and Human Services Finance Committee, Rep Dean successfully negotiated a balanced reform bill that takes steps to put patients and their families back in control of purchasing the right insurance and making the best decisions with their own doctor. At the bill’s signing, Governor Pawlenty credited Dean for his work to reach across the aisle and find common ground. The reforms aim is to reduce healthcare costs by 12%. Dean fought fraud and abuse in our state’s public programs. Ineligible recipients who fraudulently represent their citizenship or income use millions of dollars work of taxpayer-funded healthcare. This drives up the cost private consumers must pay and puts counties and hospitals further behind. Dean pushed for hearings to uncover abuse and fraud across the state.
